Description

The Division of Pharmacy in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences invites applications for the Department Chair for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PSC). Wayne State University is classified as a Very High Research Activity University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The College is in midtown, a dynamic urban community leading the Detroit renaissance. The cosmopolitan environment is rich in cultural offerings, strong schools, and outstanding affordable housing, all within the beautiful Great Lakes region. The PSC department is renowned for its strong research programs in medicinal chemistry, drug delivery and nanomedicine, molecular pharmacology, genomics and proteomics, and precision medicine. The department consists of an array of well-funded faculty members in interdisciplinary research areas in neuroscience, metabolic disorders, infectious disease, cancer, and environmental health. The PSC Department is part of the Pharmacy Division and provides a well-recognized graduate program and co-delivers the Doctor of Pharmacy Program. Essential Functions (job duties) are as follows:
• Provide general administrative supervision over the educational and professional programs
• Fiscal operations of the department, including managing the department budget.
• Develop a strategic vision with faculty input with benchmarks and timelines to drive transformative growth in the next 5-10 years.
• Develop and expand departmental resources including, supporting faculty to procure grants
• Lead departmental research activities, including initiation of scholarly activities and encouraging team science among researchers, educators, and practitioners
• Recruit and recommend appointments, promotions, and continuing tenure within the department.
• Foster faculty career development consistent with the department's mission through the annual review of each faculty member's career development plan to include mentorship of junior, mid-level, and senior faculty.
• Provide leadership in developing professional and graduate education in the department.
• Oversee the progress, academic discipline, grievance and general welfare of department students.
• Represent the department at College/University functions
• Develop and maintain networks of support for the department.



Requirements

Candidates must possess excellent leadership, communication, research, teaching, and mentoring skills. The successful applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, or a related discipline and have experience in academic leadership. The candidate must have a strong track record of sustained extramurally funded research and publication. National and international recognition of the individual’s scientific contribution is expected. Experience and success in training and mentoring at multiple levels is required. Prior experience in leadership of an interdisciplinary team in a highly active research environment is desired. Desired leadership style is collaborative and consensus building leading to join decision making.
