Homer Electric Association (HEA) is a member-owned electric utility serving the central and southern areas of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. We are excited to be growing our Engineering team and are seeking for a Systems Engineering Supervisor to join the leadership group. The Systems Engineering Supervisor position has a direct impact to recruit, lead and oversee an engineering team that is tasked with the planning, design, electrical protection, maintenance, studies, and implementation of projects and upgrades related to generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

This position will work out of the Kenai HEA office. The hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. This will be a salaried (exempt) position.


  • Responsible for development of the operating budget pertaining to the engineering personnel and projects while staying within the budgetary constraints.
  • Involved in the interview, selection, new hire, termination, and evaluation of personnel under this position's supervision in accordance with personnel guidelines by law and by the collective bargaining agreements.
  • Direct and contribute to the development and implementations of:
    • Engineering plans as the basis for system improvement and maintenance.
    • Construction work plans related to generation, transmission, and distributionsystem improvements and maintenance to ensure their compatibility with the financial goals and growth trends.
    • Construction support of substation and substation improvements.
    • Long range plans, 2-4-year construction work plans and specifications, standards, and procedures.
    • Performance of electric system coordination studies to verify the correct selection and configurations of protective devices ensuring a high degree of electrical system reliability.
    • Calculations to evaluate system performance, reporting existing and potential conditions which may degrade the quality or reliability of the systems.
  • In collaboration with the Cyber Security & Information Technology department, assist with the direction and management communications technicians in the maintenance and upgrade of all communications and SCADA systems.



  • ABET accredited bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology.
  • Electrical Engineering degree with Power Systems background is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of utility industry experience with transmission, distribution, or substation emphasis.
  • Must be registered as or be able to obtain within two (2) years a Professional Engineering license. Alaska registration is preferred. License must remain active once obtained.
  • Must submit a valid Alaska Driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Must possess or be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card, as required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) for unescorted access to secure areas of the nation's maritime transportation system, within 30 calendar days of employment.


  • Must demonstrate the ability to actively supervise and manage assigned personnel to maintain a knowledgeable, responsive, and flexible organization.
  • Excellent communication skills with the technical aptitude to work closely with all levels of the company.
  • Must have a working knowledge of substation and line protective devices, transformers, metering, serial and network communications, microwave, fiber, radio systems, SCADA systems, three phase power, power calculations and phasors.
  • Project management skills to manage multiple projects with varying scopes and timelines.
