Job Description

Vertex Cell and Gene Therapies (VCGT) is seeking an energetic and self-motivated Scientist I to join its growing Delivery R&D team. The full-time role will support research in the development, optimization and evaluation of therapeutics delivered via biomedical devices. The Formulation Chemist Scientist I will be responsible for developing and evaluating novel polymeric formulations by executing study protocols, reports, and specifications specific to cell and gene therapy modalities. The successful candidate will have a balanced understanding of the biomedical device field, including the characterization of polymers. The position is located in Providence, RI and will report to the Senior Manager, Translational Engineering.

Activities
  • Extensive hands-on experience in the development of novel polymeric formulations/technologies
  • Conduct material properties evaluations including mechanical testing, FTIR, DSC, SEM, TGA, etc. and various assays for functional characterization
  • Evaluate in vitro (ELISA, HPLC) and in vivo release kinetics (oral, IP, IV, SQ routes) of proteins and small molecules
  • Analyze and evaluate novel coating formulations based on polymers / biomaterials or biomaterials containing surface modifications
  • Collate and interpret complex analytical data systematically, and compiles results into a cohesive body of conclusions or recommendations to guide project decisions
  • Exercises solid judgment and demonstrates ability to handle multiple activities for a study
  • Performs advanced and/or complex experimental troubleshooting
  • Identifies, prioritizes and introduces relevant emerging analytical technologies or approaches
  • Maintains accurate laboratory notebooks with inclusion of or references to sources of raw data
  • Independently prepares presentations and presents experimental conclusions at internal project team meetings
  • Effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and promote and contribute to a cohesive team working culture
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously as well as participate on cross-functional teams.

Required qualifications:
  • PhD with 0-3 years of experience in Life Sciences, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Biology, or related, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in the development of polymeric controlled release drug delivery systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge in polymer and materials characterization
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • The ability to work in a fast pace environment, manage priorities, and maintain timelines for multiple activities
  • Ability to quantify experimental results and present to groups effectively
  • Flexibility in working schedule to accommodate weekend work
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and knowledge of statistics.
